Element 1.1
Describe and apply physiological and bio mechanical concepts related to skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness
Artifact:Exercise Physiology VO2 Max Lab
Date: Spring 2012
Reflection:
The VO2 max lab for exercise physiology demonstrates my ability to describe and apply physiological concept because it required students to breakdown, and analyze a movement skill. I was assigned to calculate the VO2 Max of an individual using devices that measure oxygen inhalation and carbon dioxide exhalation. This project gave me the experience of using the technology required to measure the maximal volume of oxygen consumed by muscle mitochondria in order to measure an individual's capacity for aerobic work. This artifact is important to my development as an educator because it has given a tool to reference to when measuring student work output and a more effective measure than just norm-based criteria. This piece of technology could be vital to physical educators, if they desire to measure a student's cardiovascular output and when exactly their VO2 requirements will be met. The physical educator could use graphs of the data and break down the concept for students to view, if they are visual learners.
